Height and breadth
Posted by j88 on Sep 11th 2009

Just something I’ve noticed, but shorter stature is easily countered with a wider frame. Basically, I mean that even if a person is shorter than average, it doesn’t always appear that way if they have a bigger build.

Now, I’m not talking about people who are as wide as they are tall (I’m pretty sure there is a point where it ends up making you look even shorter than you are), but when you tend to have wider shoulders, chest and jaw.

I’m only about 5’8“ish, and have a friend who is probably a bit shorter. He seems to cop quite a bit of flack from people about it, and I often ask them why no one ever makes those same comments about me despite our similar heights. I assumed part of it was because it wouldn’t really get much of a reaction from me, but they said I didn’t appear short because I had a more ‘manly’ build. I guess I have a stocky build (average shoulders and jaw, but a fairly barrel chest) and despite not getting much taller since leaving high school, my body did continue to develop.

I did notice this again in other people such as geology lecturers I had at uni. Last semester I had a teacher who was about my height, but had a very muscled body and would easily be assumed to be taller. Same thing with a lecturer I have this semester who is similarly built that I look down to, who I thought looked my height or taller when I’m sitting in class, but when I went up after the lecture to talk to him he was an inch or two shorter!

Is it possible that our minds correlate secondary sex characteristics (such as increased height, body hair, deeper voice, broader shoulders, larger jaw and bigger muscles) together, so that we are deceived?

Hmm, it is possible. Interesting theory. All I can say for sure is it’s best not to trust your eyes. Go with the other senses too, they know what their talking about. And reason’s a wonderous thing to compliment the lot.

It’s the opposite for me – I associate stockier builds with shorter people, so I can get thrown off when I see someone “my height” walking down the street only to find out he’s 6’8”.

On the other hand, I don’t think I’ve ever mistaken a shorter lanky dude to be taller.

I’m sorry, but your response made me think of nothing but sex :S

I have concluded that there is no hope for me.

J, you are a fiend, let’s face it. There’s nothing that can stop you from thinking of sex, as everything reminds you of it.

Yes J, I must concur with jack. With all the hormones running through your body….it is amazing you are not much much larger.

Methinks its mostly just because I’m a bit repressed in some regards. Longish story short, I get sex occasionally, but I don’t get satisfaction from it. Horniness stays.
