To those it concerns
Posted by j88 on Nov 28th 2009

This website might be about tall people, but that does not mean you need to make up ‘tall’ tales. You people know who you are.

Fantastical profiles and stolen photos are ruining the efforts of a hard working admin, and ruining the reputation of this website.

There was a fantasy and roleplay section on the older site which never seemed to take off, despite the fact that many things I read involved fantasy and roleplay. If you are that desperate for its return ask admin to start it up again.

It seems many people have completely missed the point of the site and have mistaken it for coiledfist.

I’m sure I don’t speak for the entire HG population, but I know that many others have similar feelings as I do about the ways things have been going.

Good day to you all.

I have always felt it is for people of any height, not just tall. Am I the only one that feels that way?

What he is meaning that there are some people, either making a phony profile, using someone elses photo as themselves, etc. j88, I do agree with you there. Let’s hope not to turn this into a headgame site.

J is writing this in response to an issue I mentioned where (for the SECOND time, I might add) someone falsely posted a picture of a friend of mine. It’s a little disrespectful to peddle yourself off as someone else. Especially if you have NO idea who that person is. Usually because someone here WILL know the person.

The biggest issue is that when you post a false picture of someone who is undeniably straight and dating someone, and then you label yourself str8 but curious/bi/or gay, you’re opening up a world of trouble for the actual person. I almost confronted this friend personally instead of messaging him here first. If I hadn’t noticed the incorrect height, I could have caused a very awkward situation.

Also realize that no matter the level of anonymity, be it random 7’ kid at a small university or Shaq, someone on this site will most likely know this person. Hell, they could be on this site and not have a pic posted for various reasons.

This is one of my few short (ha) issues with the “Sitegeist” of this group. I really hope that some sort of moral responsibility will kick in on some level.

I’m 100% behind j88 (yeah I am…), and I hope we’re not alone in this.

I have posted blogs in the past about optional verification that would reduce or prevent this kind of thing from happening. Basically, you ask admin o give you a unique code. You them get a photo of yourself holding a piece of paper with the number on it, making sure your face pic is clear. Send that to Admin and they can then put a marker on your profile to indicate you are genuine. The photo doesn’t go on your profile for those who prefer to remain anonymous. It could even go one step further and be a photo in a door frame to validate your height.
If this idea was implemented, then genuine user can choose to only chat with other genuine users. Genuine people shouldn’t have any issue verifying they are who they say they are. Only the fakes will have something to hide.

I agree with j88, and think manchestermikey’s suggestion would be really nice.

Why would people even bother to make a fake profile? It makes no sence to me and its annoying. Could someone explain why some people do????

Mikey, you might be reading my mind. I suggested that idea to people a while ago to see what they felt about it. It seems the only people who would actually bother with such a thing are the people who we have little doubt are actually real to begin with.

Talldude, what I meant about saying this website is about tall people, is that most of the interest and conversation revolves around them. I think admin has no desire to exclude anyone, nor does the sites population. Most likely this is because the website used to be tallmengroup and tall men were the focus. A change in name hasn’t done much to change the mindset it seems.

Giantman, people do it because they often have a sexual fetish for height. Whether it be a dominance thing, a muscle fantasy or purely for the attention they get. Yes, it is frustrating, and yes we should stop it from happening on here. This is not the place for it to be done. There are already websites that cater to those fetishes and people should learn to utilise them.

I feel that the fakers and their encouragement has driven down the website. Potentially honest members come on here and write off the website after seeing the activity that goes on. This isn’t what they signed on for and they leave. The site has little credibility in that regard and it makes it frustrating when nothing is there to deter them.

manchestermikey, that seems like a great idea. I don’t bother with the chat room because I know there are a lot of fake profiles out there. I’d rather know I’m talking with a genuine person. Many fake profiles are easy to spot, but not always.

doctorfate, I don’t know if the “random 7’ kid at a small university” comment was a crack at me in the encounters at school thread or not, but know that I’m intentionally not giving any names of people or the school I go to to prevent people from contacting them or pretending to be them. I know that if they wanted to be a part of this community, they would be.

no, not at all. I don’t even know you. lol.

Besides, my university actually isn’t quite that small. I guess 40,000 plus students is actually quite big. hahah.

I 100% agree with you guys! I really feel some kinda betrayed when you realize that someone is totally lying to you. The idea of the confirmation picture is really good! Let’s take you camera guys! :-)

Hey! It took a lot of money to get this surgery done! And the facepaint’s pretty tough to have on 24/7 too!
As to the matter in hand, I agree. Verification of not just person but also height would help, as there have been some cases (like Sean, who is definitely tall, but questions have sometimes been raised as to how tall, though I’m not saying either way here. Just noting the fact)
Of course, making it compulsory would be a bit mean, and certainly pretty tiresome for some, but for those who would want it, and those who have been questioned in the past, it would be a helpful tool. I would certainly do it.

helpful, but not infallible.

“Hey mom, can you take a picture of me inna doorway so I could prove my height to a bunch of anonymous men online?”

“Whaaaaaat???”

A problem arises in the fact that doorway pics can still be fabricated. I can easily find a door that’s built smaller than standard. Aside from that, I can wear looser pants and stand on a stool or stack of books. Next thing you know “Giantteenfate” is the most popular kid on HG.

You have to also be willing to assume that most tall guys are possessing of enough of a chip on their elevated shoulders to feel the need to prove their height. If they’re sincere, there’s always the chance they really don’t care enough to post any more than what pics they drag over from facebook. If they’re fakes, there will still be myriad people here who will believe that “JohnnyQGiant” is real whether he posts my friends pics or not. :)
