Fakes: Fun or need banning
Posted by manchestermikey on Mar 14th 2010

Ok, so the regular chatroom users KNOW who the fakes are. Admin bans duplicate accounts but doesn’t ban obvious fakes. Do you think fakes should be banned or are they harmless fun?

I think it’s harmless fun. ESPECIALLY if we’re allowed to have a little fun in return. At their expense, of course. I’ve always seen the more annoying ones as joke, and I’m usually uninhibited when teasing them. The tallest objects tend to make the best lightning rods. If they can’t handle it, they should come off the roof.

There are, of course, a few that I have no desire to call out. They have been perfectly civil and friendly. They probably see it as a way to get attention that they otherwise fail to receive in real life. I won’t fault them that.

It’s the obnoxious ones that need to be struck down.

I would definitely be against an angry mob inspired witch hunt. Nothing good ever comes of that. I’d just suggest letting them have their fun and indulge in a little shadenfreude of your own. Within reason, of course…

(I apologize if my prose seems a little TOO lightning themed. It’s the sideburns….)

I don’t really see the point in banning any of them, they’ll just create a new account.

I think the admin should work on the idea someone else suggested before about being able to make ‘verified’ accounts where the admin gives someone a code or something that they need to take a picture of themself holding to prove who they are. Then when you are talking to someone, you can check their profile to see whether they’re real or fake.

But I agree with doc as well.

I don’t think the code thing would ever work, to be honest. People find it hard enough to post in the forums let alone try and verify their account.

Those who are dedicated to the site will make the time to verify themselves – taking a photo with a verification number and uploading it only takes seconds. Those who chose not to don’t have to. I have posted about optional verification in the past but the idea has not been taken up. If enough people are in favour, maybe Admin will implement it?

well if that’s the case… you/ we can do it ourselves… just post a pic with our name and heightgroup written on it

if it’s not gonna be mandatory (which i don’t think it should be) it’s basically the same thing.

Good idea… a member-driven verification scheme. Maybe we could agree to take the photo holding up a piece of paper with your screen name on it and stood in front of a door… verify yourself and your height in one go. Yes, I know it’s not fool proof but it’s the best I can think of. I’m going to do it this week (once I’ve done my hair lol!)

Well I think I have been the only one to put a picture of me with a “miniman83” written on a piece of paper…

I agree with doc’. If people like to lie that’s not my problem if it doesn’t have consequences.

In my case, I have been chatting with vikctorwalczak and he was nice and then I told him I planned on going to canada with my gf. And then he just proposed me to help with housing etc… I trusted him and it turned out he was a fake!! I was kinda disappointed since I had talked about it to my gf and I had planned a part of my trip because of that possibility of housing!

Well for fake people: try not to put people in that embarassing position please!

Now I try to be more carefull and not to trust in everyone!

Sorry to hear that miniman… that kind of situation is less likely to happen with verification. You’ll be able to trust someone a little more if they taken the effort to prove they are genuine.

I really like this idea! I’ve been burned by at least 5 fakes on other websites (one of which I was stupid enough to have feelings for after chatting with him for 6 months) so it would be really great if the Admin could find a way to put it to work.

I agree with mike, although it may seem ludicrous to have to use a verification, it seems as though it may have gotten to that point. Some of these people are obvious fakes and can be particularly irritating in the chat rooms and such. Although, yes I can understand how some of them are very civil, I would kind of appreciate knowing the person I am talking with. And although it is voluntary to post a picture, it seems right that everyone should have a picture of some kind because it builds conversation and identity of sorts. It is not as though I expect height group to be like the real world, but you can still maintain a position of anonymity while showing us who you really are, and not to speak on others behalf, but a majority of us are nice people (excluding kiddo ) and are more than open and tolerant to your true self.

I also agree about this, it works on LPSG so why not use it here? I’m willing to post a picture of myself with a piece of paper with my username and the website address, albeit a crappy webcam pic lol

I have nothing but sympathy for miniman. It really sucks being burned like that. (MM, If you ever have a reason to come to Tallahassee, FL, I’ll meet you at the airport to slap you in the face for EVER coming to such a crappy town. Then I’ll throw your butt right back on the plane. But I won’t flake on you. hahaha.) In rare cases like that, I can understand wanting some sort of verification. However, real people can be just as flaky.

However, cases like that are rare. Before we form a mob and start lynching every 15yo 8’ kid with a size 37 shoe, we need to ask ourselves a question. Is this an online community, or a dating site?

I’m on the side of the former. For the very reason that there are ppl that have a reason to hide their ID. If we start a crack down to prove who is and isn’t real, how do we protect the ones that are real and yet desire to preserve their privacy?

And again, this photo-verification system is easy to cheat. I have two or three 6’11” (or taller) friends whom I could get to take photos with my screen name. What’s the next step after that? Web-cam verification? We all have a private session with the admin?

In the end, it doesn’t really matter.

or the other question is… is this an online community or a place for fakes to come and roleplay out their fantasies? Sure, verification isn’t infalable, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Yes, you could take photos of your big friends and claim it to be you, but that takes more effort and also is a slap in the face of real friends. I don’t think the fakes here have big friends or are bad enough people to pretend to be their mates.

I totally agree with manchestermikey. I don’t think a verification system would be a crack down on people who want to keep their privacy. If a person chooses not to be verified, it’s their choice and I for one would not look down on them for choosing it. However, if they started to talk to me, I would be less trusting of that person than I normally would with a verified person. I feel like the system would help to protect those people who are genuine and want to talk to non-fakes while at the same time, it will have minimal effect on those people who don’t get verified.
