Anger Over 'Humiliating' Dwarf Theme Park

A controversial theme park in southwest China has drawn criticism from disbaled groups for providing “humiliating” employment for dwarfs.

China’s “Little People’s Kingdom”, employs 108 dwarfs from across the country who dance and sing in fairytale costumes, drawing curious crowds.

As well as a host of dwarf guardian angels, the fantasy kingdom has a king, an army, a health bureau and its own foreign ministry, who all pretend to live in the miniature hilltop village.

The show’s centrepiece is a farcical rendition of Swan Lake, that sees performers both male and female dressed in pink tutus and pretending to be little swans.

But some disabled people’s rights groups and members of China’s vocal online community have branded the kingdom “humiliating” and say it increases stigma.

The only qualification required for dwarfs to be employed at the theme park is to be shorter than 130cm and be self-sufficient in daily life.

The youngest employee is 18 and the oldest 48.

The fact of the matter is that your apperance will elude you to fit different rolls. Someone who is a dwarf, will clearly fit this. This is a company that is trying to put on an enterainment show, and they are just trying to put on the best show they can. People are going to call descrimination for anything. This is no different then a casino firing a waitress for putting on too much weight. That is the companies decision to set that criterion for the worker, and they knew this coming in. Since it is written down, it is transparent, and it is known, it is not a form of descrimination. This is because it has an impact on the theme the company is trying to go for. If you don’t agree with it, then oh well. It is their decision.

Now people will just say I am descriminating myself here, and what about “gay hiring descrimination”. Honestly, if the company has a well founded decision to why they do not want a gay worker at their company, then it is their descision to descriminate in that way. Truth be told I can not think of very many well founded reasons for not allowing gay’s to be hired, unless it is a sexual company of some kind.

All in all, people are just getting their undies in a bunch because they don’t fit the bill. There is nothing wrong here.

I think its less exploitative than the short guy who used to kick his own head on Jackass.

Kinda like wearing short pants and running up and down a wooden court with big orange ball, just so that “normal people” can stare at you.

I get the whole “not wanting to procreate stereotypes” thing….but nobody is holding a gun to anyone’s head to become an employee of the park either.Playing “Devil’s advocate” for a moment, perhaps these are one of the few types of employment these people can get?
