Part of the problem is that most people here have a limited list of things to converse about (despite the perception that it has expanded). Also the breadth of the people here will cause quite a number of discussions (should they be brought up) to decompose rather quickly.
Really it is the people on the forum, that makes the forum. I am an administrator on another forum and I have seen this first hand. The problem is (for what ever reason), people here would rather watch, then actually add something. Or, they do not fit in (again for whatever reason) to post in a way that they naturally would.
I find the biggest stumbling block to posting is when someone posts very odd things over and over in a single discussion. It breaks the flow, and quite frankly, I don’t want to be notified that the guy said the same crazy thing again.
