Where is everyone from, and what makes your city (or homeland if you don’t want to be too specific) special?
I live in Brisbane, Australia which is the capital city of Queensland. We have a population of around 1 million. We aren’t as popular as our 2 major cities of Sydney and Melbourne, but we are a pretty great city in our own right.
We have a subtropical climate here, and are well known for being the sunshine state. Our weather is pretty warm and sunny all year around and we only get about 2 months of cold (which is pretty tolerable). Our Summers are pretty hot, but it is mostly due to the humidity which is pretty hard to beat.
I think the most recognised thing we are known for is holding World Expo ’88. We also hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games and 2001 Goodwill Games. I think we are planning an Olympic bid for the future as well.
We aren’t a coastal city, but instead have a big dirty river that runs through us. The coasts that are North and South of us (Sunshine and Gold, respectively) are a short drive away and also have plenty of theme parks and tourist attractions on the way.
We also have plenty of zoo’s and wildlife attractions just out of the city too. This includes the late Steve Irwin’s zoo, Australia Zoo which I’m pretty sure his wife Terri now runs.
We are progressively becoming more arts and culture aware, as our cultural precinct expands to now include a Gallery Of Modern Art alongside our other galleries and museums. We are also one of the top ranking places in the world for live music (I think we might have been first at some point?).
That’s all I can think of for now.
I grew up in southern New Jersey, as well as the Jersey shore. I do not like new jersey very much though, and in general I do not like the east coast at all. I consider where I go to college in Bozeman, Montana to be my home. I fit in much more strongly out here and it just “feels” right. I won’t be here for much longer as I graduate in the spring, and will be in graduate school somewhere in the pacific northwest.

So I guess your hometown is best known for Jersey Shore? ![]()
I live in Apeldoorn witch is in The Netherlands.
Our country is known for his legal softdrugs what you can buy at some coffeeshops.
We are also the tallest nation in the world.
Amsterdam is known as the (drugs) capital of The Netherlands and also well known for her red light district: “De Wallen”.
A well know politician is Geert Wilders who has made a anti-Islam movie that went all over the world.
My city is known for the failed attack on our Queen.
On April 30, 2009 – the Dutch national holiday Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day) – a man drove his car at high speed into a parade which included Queen Beatrix and other members of the Royal family.
The driver hit members of the public lining the street leaving twenty-two injured and eight dead, including himself, who died the following day. Although the Royal family was unharmed, it is believed to be the first attack on the Dutch royal family in modern times.
We also have one of the palaces of the Queen in Apeldoorn.
We have a temperate or cold sea climate
We don’t walk on clogs or wooden shoes or whatever you want to call them. That was more than hundred years ago. Now only some farmers and weirdo’s wear them.

That reminds me, one of the guys responsible for wikileaks, Julian Assange was born in a city not too far from where I live. He is in a world of trouble now.

What about tulips? Is there still lots of tulips? And windmills?
yes we have tulips and windmills. most of the windmills are under protection of the cultural protection of Dutch heritage (or something like that)
I’ve heard that there are more than 100.000 kinds of tulips.
But we are also a country that doesn’t have hills or mountains. Most area’s of our country lies below sea level, but we are also famous because our Delta Works that is preventing the sea to overfload our country. We helped the people in New Orleans by bulding dikes. when hurricane Cathrina destroyed most of it.
But we are also famous for our Golden Age. (the 17th century) when we were the greatest nation in trade. New York was Dutch than and was called New Amsterdam.
We are also know for our Dutch painters, (van Gogh, etc)

Weren’t tulips also ridiculously expensive at some stage?

“Even old New York, was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it I can’t say, people just liked it better that wayyyyyyyyyyy!”
Sorry, just had to put in that in. Bonus points for whoever knows the song!
Also, is your username a Scrubs reference?
I’m at home in Cologne, Germany. There are several special things: First the carnival
and then our great cathedral. Of course the river “Rhine” is very nice, too. And last but not least there are the very nice Cologne people :-)

Sure—its the song “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” originally sung by The Four Lads in 1953 or thereabouts. Its been recorded by other groups since.
I am from Ecuador, which is best known for the Galapagos Islands, but we also have a bit of the Amazon rainforest and the Andes crosses our country in the middle from North to South.
Ecuador is located in the equator as you might expect, so it is said that we enjoy a year-round Spring-like weather. I live in Quito, which is in the Andes region, and here lately it has been very cold for our standards, getting as low as 2 degrees Celsius one night (the coldest night we have ever had for as long as we can remember; water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius). Quito is 2,800 meters above sea level.
Ecuador is a diverse country, we have 14 different native groups, not sure if that number includes the majority mestizo population. Spanish is the most-widely spoken language, followed by Quichua and other indigenous languages.
I am 174 cm tall which makes me somewhat tall for our standards. There are taller men, but very few. Some Americans, Europeans, Australians, and Canadians stand out here because of their height. I like tall tourists ![]()
I am in Orlando,Florida. and we all know what is there, it is the land of theme parks! Some of the best in the world.
Nice place to visit!
I grew up in England but currently I’m living in Austria ![]()
