Unsure how much international news some of you get, but currently my city (Brisbane, Australia) and quite a few in surrounds have been hit by some major flooding. I count my blessings that I and my family don’t live close enough to the river to be effected, but I do know a few people that have had to evacuate or even worse have had their homes destroyed.
Fortunately the death toll and known missing persons is relatively low, and our government has been quick to react. Also great that our citizens have been quick to react and help each other out.
Sadly some of the more rural places have been hit far worse, one even looks like a literal warzone requiring military helicopters to airlift people out.
While I think the rain has cleared for now and the worst is over, the flooding and severe storms are still moving south and the long term effects for our entire country will soon be felt.
It was bizarre going into supermarkets, as almost every last one has been raided of fresh fruit and veg, milk, meat and bread. The suppliers have been pretty badly hit and a lot of agricultural land has been rendered almost useless.
Our city centre here is largely underwater which is going to have a pretty huge economic impact. The university I attend is one of the biggest in out state and it too is underwater. Hopefully students going back next semester have somewhere to go.
I don’t really know why I am posting this, but just thought I’d share. Hopefully no one here has any family or friends affected by this.
There is plenty of info and videos around if you want to see the extent of the damage. “Brisbane floods” or “Queensland floods” will bring up plenty of results on google or youtube.
We have heard about that in france. They told us the bad story of a 13 year old boy that died saving his younger brother…
Great that you are not affected too much by that floodings…I have family and friends in “nouvelle calédonie”...they are excpeting a cyclone…Hope it won’t reach australia too…Its name is Vania I think.
Are all australian/new zeland guys ok?
Ooh, “my” lovely Australia… I remember my trip to the tropics in the north-east, where my car would be almost floating off the road. Was pretty stressful… but that was nothing compared to what I’ve seen on TV now.
It does look really crazy, or a complete disaster to put it that way. Hope the waters will recede and everything gets back to normal soon!
We’re certainly hearing about this flooding. Best wishes to JM and the other Queensland members here.
