Seeing Someone Taller Than You
Posted by tallguy7387 on Jan 23rd 2011

What do all of you shorter guys do when you are out somewhere and see somone who is taller than you walks in?
I used to get annoyed when I had to duck to get thru a doorway to enter some place because it drew attention to my height and people would stare. The when I would stand up the ceilings were less than a foot above the top of my head.
Lately it seems like more ane more places are putting in doors that are over 7’-0” high and now I don’t have to duck to enter. The ceiling heights are 9’-0” or higher so I don’t have to duct when I go under a fan.

I typically keep a discreet eye on the guy and maybe I venture to get close and see how tall he is compared to me. I am always wondering if the person is annoyed by short people asking about his size/stats and staring at him, so I usually leave tall people alone. I understand why you like that doors and ceilings are not as short as before … to bad that from my perspective that this means less opportunities to enjoy size comparison. Ceilings and doors has always been very helpful for that.

A lot of guy stry to venture close to see how much shorter they are. They ususally have someone take a picture with a camera phone so they have a record of it. Then they try to get a comparison shot of their foot against mine. I do get asked alot of questions about my height and the size of my shoes and sometimes it can be annoying. The worst ones to try and compare themselves against me are women. The worst ones to make comments or ask questions about my height are little kids, but how can you get annoyed at a little kid they only say the first thing that comes to mind. The parents are the ones that get upset with the questions. I usually ask the parents if it is alright to put the kid up on my shoulders so they can feel what it is like to be taller than everyone else.

Hey tallguy—outta curiosity-what types of approaches are less annoying (or more appreciated) when someone wants to meet or talk to you? I know when I meet someone over 6’6 or so its hard for me to think of anything to talk about other then the difference in height. I’m not one for doing comparisons (I don’t care how big the guys hands, feet, etc. may be). But I’d like to find some way to talk to them that doesn’t seem weird or stupid. Or do tall guys just expect that everyone wants to talk about how tall they are? Any suggestions as to how to approach someone much taller with the intent of making a friend?

You could always just strike up a normal conversation like you do with average sized people. _‘ Movies and boring small talk like that.

Aren’t you 5’8’‘, Alex? About 1-2 inches bigger than me.

Does anyone else, around average height or slightly below perhaps, sometimes feel they can have “short” days and “tall” days, depending where you are or who you’re surrounded by? I never really feel the tallest but there have been days I’ve walked down a street or something and noticed quite a few really short guys and it’s been quite a feeling. Kinda made me think if that’s what it’s like regularly for really tall guys; to walk around and everyone to be below you and have to look up. Then it makes me wonder how incredibly massive the tall guys would be to the really short guys.

I think I’m kind of in an in between height sort of. Sort of below average, but not too short.

In my country, being 6ft6 wearing 20s shoes usually makes me the big foot giant walking on earth, and a lot of staring happens. Though in London, my height isn’t much of a big deal, and I often find myself sneaking a couple of stares at folks taller than me. My feet, though, still gather a lot of attention. Doors aren’t a problem, as only my hair touches the top of the doorway

I am used to see tall people around at volley ball…I think that they are the ones that stared at me when I am playing!! lol
I don’t mind jokes etc..It’s fair I think.

However in your case, it’s true that it may happen all the time in streets, restaurants etc…

As markspy said, I try to be discrete if I want to take a second look at someone who intriguished me (may be a tall person, a small one, someone really different from me etc..)

Sorry guys for being that curious toward people who are different

Tallguy7387, I understand how it can be irritating…The constant stares, the questions, etc. I was curious as to whether you liked being extremely tall? I find a lot of guys I talk to that are 6-10 or taller…..aren’t really happy being tall. Jeff

tall20pt, at least your 6’6’‘, i wish i was taller. I’m 6’3’‘ with size 20 feet.

you think you y get looks, for me im the clown in the crowd, especially when i wear my white nike hyperdunks. i love my new shoes, but it really attracts attention.

the annoying thing is the same with tallguy7387, they just stare at you…

to be honest, i wish people just come up to me and ask me my shoe size, i’m more than willing to tell anyone, but people just like to talk behind our backs.

To:iwanttobetaller…... That’s too bad people stare….Personally, I would find it tremendously sexy. A guy your height with feet that size.Of course, 6-3 is where the sexy starts….It only gets sexier from there on up…...But of course, that’s just me. All in all, the human being is a rude creature. People have had so much “politically correct” bullshit shoved up their asses for so long….They are now too timid…and afraid to ask questions. Just do it, I say…if you unintentionally offend someone, simply apologize. Wow, wasn’t that difficult?

Well they’re talking behind your back to probably not hurt your feelings/annoy you right? I know a LOT of tall peeps hate being asked “the question” and the same goes for any other people with abnormal features like a disability. In another case…you wouldn’t ask a person with a deformed face “Um excuse me..? How’d your face end up like that?” It might stir up some unpleasant feelings for them. Same could sort of be said for your onlookers. They might not wanna hurt your uh feelings.

i met a 6’11’ guy last week – the tallest person i’ve ever met. i went up to him and said hello to him and apologise for what i had to ask him – his height. he was very shock at my shoe size. he had to ask me because he was a 15 and im a 20.

i think the fact that he was way taller than me and i had way bigger shoes was a good start to the conversation. i said next time he’s in the area i said we have to take pics of each other just to make fun of our extremes.

i wonder if i will get to see a 7 footer or yourself tallguy7387. then i think you would tower me in both shoe and height. then i would feel really small

I had some young kid in the neighborhood that I used to live in that had your problem. When he was 13 years old he had to stop playing street hockey because he outgrew the largest roller blades he could find. He could not get his foot inside a size 15 anymore. He took a size 17 shoe when he was 14 years old and 5’-11 tall. He ended up 1t 6’3 with a size 19 shoe. Everyone was trying to compare his foot with theirs and would make fun of his feet. When he went bowling with his friends he had to bowl in his socks.
