Have you shrunk?
Posted by underfive7 on Nov 23rd 2011

Hi from a newbie! At the ripe old of 50 I have discovered that I am now .5 cm/.25 inch shorter than my peak height of 169.5cm/5ft 6.75. Yes I have shrunk! I guess I am one of the oldest here, but has anyone else lost height and if so how much? Also how much shorter do you think I will get?!

i always thought i was 5’10. i am actually just over 5’9. it all depends on how i stand etc. my normal stance puts me at 5 foot 9. i have read that you could lose about an inch or so from compression of the disks in your spine. welcome to the site! jessie

I can’t say empirically I have – but either I have shrunk, or people are getting better at actually measuring themselves. LOL

Now I feel short and wide lol. Weighing in at 180 lbs means I am often wider than people who tower me.

Am 49. Supposedly I was 5’11” at one point because my driver’s license still says that but really I’m now 5’9” if not slightly shorter. In some people you seem to shrink as you age especially if you’re not in shape. I have seen it happen with my dad, my older brothers, etc.

http://kidshealth.org/kid/grownup/getting_older/shrink.html
>>it’s common for older people to become a little shorter over time. It isn’t dramatic or sudden. It takes place over years and may add up to only an inch or so off of their adult height (maybe a little more, maybe less). This kind of shrinking can’t be reversed, although people can slow or stop this process.

This page also mentions smoking or drinking booze can make it more likely, and that you shrink gradually over the course of a day. Maybe half an inch, who knows. There’s a scene in Incredible Shrinking Man where he goes to a doctor who says he probably isn’t shrinking, and the doc says the bit about how we gradually shrink each day. “...Two inches, doctor?,” asks Scott Carey.

A scene in Parenthood:
A teen relative: “How are you doing grandma?”
Grandma: “I’m shrinking!”
Teen: “Bummer!”
——
A scene in the Simpsons has Lisa remarking that Grandpa Simpson
seems to be shrinking with age. “I am not!,” says Grandpa…who
is barely taller than the chair…

Thanks shrinking man. I think I’m just under 5’7 first thing and scraping 5’6 after a long day. I wonder how long before I change my name to underfive6! Still given my age and weight I don’t think I’m doing too bad. However a few days ago at work someone took a pic of me with 3 older female colleagues – and they were all taller than me – one was stooping which made me feel really short. I am taller than my chair though lol.

I always thought I was closer to 5’9” until I went for a physical and asked to get measured. I also have small hands and feet…size 8…and today is seems like more and more guys and even kids are bigger than I am as a fully grown man. Kind of intimidating to look up to a kid who is already bigger than you, especially since i grew quickly when I was younger and used to be a tall kid myself.

It was similar with me. When I started second school aged 11 I was way under 5ft but had a growth spurt at 12 and shot to 5’6 making me about the 4th tallest in my class that year. However by 15 I had reached my maximum height having only grown a further ¾ inch. Suddenly everyone else caught up and surpassed me. This was the mid 70s when platform shoes were fashionable – so it was even more of shock to discover that in my 3 inch man heels I was now shorter than the same aged kids in flat trainers who I previously towered over! On leaving I ended up being the second shortest guy in my year.
I agree these days everyone seems to be getting taller and with bigger feet. In my late teens I always wanted to be taller but now as I get older I am happy with my current height at just over 5’6. Although most guys are taller than me I am generally shown respect from the younger generation – which I guess could be down to my age and wide build – my feet are a UK 8.5 with 10¼ inch circumference at the ball of the foot, 44 chest and 36 waist. It’s quite a buzz when a taller slimmer guy holds a door open for me.
Wishiwastaller when did you stop being tall as a kid and how tall would you like to be?

So great to read everyone’s posts! I assume the post from shrinkingman is the same person wo writes all the great stories. If so, it is great to read your stuff. Regarding height… when younger….. I was a very late bloomer. In 8th grade at an all boys school, there was no one to wrestle me at 72 lbs. I was about 4’10 at age 13 and 72 lbs. When I got my drivers license at 16, I was 5’2 and 107 lbs. I was still getting offered the (under 12) kids menu at restaurants! Plus most every girl was taller and stronger. I did finally get taller around 18 years of age to a height of 5’9. I am still unusually small boned for a guy (small wrists, hands). Therefore, my weight of 125 does not make me look like i am dead. lol.

I was 5’8” in 7th grade and that’s when I last remember feeling tall. I was taller than a few male teachers and definitely one of the bigger kids in our class. I just took for granted that I would continue to grow. Ideally, I’d like to be 6’2” but I’m comfortable with my height…or lack of it

What height would you like to shrink to?

I would love to slowly shrink to the average size of a 10 year old. About 4’9 or so…. alot of role reversal there and i would be small enough that being independent would be difficult. I also do have a fantasy of shrinking alot further as well (6-10 inches). The idea of some mental regression is also attractive to me. Anyone else get into this?
