I know this may be quite an undertaking, but the next time the chat system is updated or improved, it would be nice to see some features added.
First off, I’d like to propose that an ‘ignore’ feature be added in chat, so that users to whom you don’t wish to chat will not be able to send you private chat requests, and so you will not be able to see their lines in the main chat. This will prevent ‘stalking’ and heckling.
Secondly (and this is the more involved proposal), I’d like to suggest that the ability to create sub-chatrooms be added to the functionality of the chatroom. Ideally, these sub-chatrooms could be created at will, and would only exist as long as they are being occupied by a member. They would be just like private chats, except they would be visible to all, and like private chats, you can communicate in both a sub-chatroom and the main chat simultaneously.
I recognised the need for such a feature when several members were having a conversation in French, and one person was trying to engage in both conversations at the same time, and it just got confusing and distracting for everyone in the chatroom.
I think several members and the admin should have a pow-wow to discuss improving this site, its features, and its functionality.
Please let me know what you think.
that old dusty chatroom we used to have it had such a function(that only worked half the time in creating said room), but when it did it was kind of nice. and the point dev made is excelent.
Dev makes a good point although I would like to see a form of sub chat room more akin to the features you get with msn where you can invite two or three others to one conversation window, but remain invisible and only those in the window can invite others to save the having lots of people making invite requests. so basically a private chat option that allows more than one to one chat only.
I’m currently in the middle of a massive re-write of the chatroom software. It’s interesting that you should mention the ability to create chatrooms, because I am aiming to develop the chat separately in a website dedicated to letting people create and join rooms of their choice.
More information on that soon, but if you interested in testing the new site when it’s a bit further along, join the Development group for more information.
While navigating through the forums today, I wanted to use the search feature to find specific threads or posts. However, the search function currently on the site is just a Google search.
In the future, will there be any way to have a specific forum search, where you can search for threads and posts by relevance or username, or even by date? That would be really useful.
Also, the chatroom really needs to automatically log off users after they’ve been idle for too long. I think two hours is a good amount of time.
actually automatic idle status would achieve much the same thing (though not relieve the load on the server), but would be more instructive, esp if “idle” was not a user-selectable status
