I was wondering if there was any way to instant message your friends when you see they are on the site? Not everyone goes to the chat room.

A way to instant message your friends? ...you mean something different from sending them messages? If they don’t want to use the chatroom, that’s their problem.

I think what’s meant by instant messaging is how some sites have a script or something that shows you who’s online and lets you instant message them.
Though really, I figure plain old messages would work just as well.
