I have a theory why the Irish can hold their liquor so well. In Canada, last call is often 2 AM, although it can be raised to 4 AM in some provinces. The US is very similar, with the latest last call being 5 AM in Alaska. But in Northern Ireland (a part of the United Kingdom), there is no last call. Some bars can stay open 24 hours a day, allowing establishments to entertain drunk blokes until dawn. And the Irish can drive with open alcohol in the car (while Canadians cannot).
So what do others think? Why do the Irish have such a good heritage for holding their liquor?
Hmm… I wouldn’t correlate the last call and ability to hold liquor together. I think there are plenty of countries that seem to have reputations for holding their liquor. Plenty of Aussies will drink until kicked out of any place they are in, and sadly Australia is becoming more conservative in that respect with regulations to lock us out a 3AM.
Australia is a nation of binge drinkers, and I guess you could make the tie to Ireland in the respect that a large majority of us have Irish ancestry.
From many accounts I have heard that Eastern Europeans have quite a reputation for being big drinkers.
Maybe genetics plays a role? I know that many oriental people do not have the enzymes to help metabolise alcohol properly and can only drink small amounts.
It is true that in the states, most places quit serving at 2a. It’s the same here in Florida, but there’s a section in Fort Lauderdale that, due to its historical exemption, stops serving at 4a. I think places in South Beach (Miami) stop between 4a and 5a.
Wow, I’m heading to Miami! Thanks size14 shox!
No you’re right j88. Different ethinic groups express the gene for alcohol dehydrogenase quite differently. Apparently people of Eastern European heritage produce more of this protein, allowing them to detoxify alcohol, thus rendering them able to consume alcohol to their hearts content.
So maybe it’s the other way around: because of this irish genetic trait, last call has been extended, lol.
I think also, Ireland has generally got more relaxed laws than other places about drinking, such as allowing minors in bars, younger drinking ages, etc.
I think if they tried to increase the drinking age or make the last call earlier, their would be an absolute outrage. You should see some of the reactions that have occurred because of this 3am lockout and alcohol tax increase here in Oz.
I’m not overly pissed off, but I know both are stupid ideas which would cause even more damage, and it already has! I fucking hate that my country is becoming a bloody police state. The internet is next and it makes my blood boil, but that is an entirely different thread.
You think Oz is becoming a police state?! We here in the UK are the most watched nation in Europe. A report was recently released showing that local authorities (police, councils and so forth) on average made 1,500 requests for surveillance on people A DAY! And this isn’t for terrorists and organised criminals, oh, no. It’s catchin people who park on double yellow lines and people who don’t put their bins out in exactly the right place, or fill them too much. And a little reminder to all the UK readers, it is now illegal to take a photo of a police officer. THAT is a country turning into a police state.
And I think the Irish have had drinking vast quantities in their culture and heritage for so long now that they have to have a few drinks just to be sober. So the maximum quota is bound to be huge. Add to that, our own Dubliner happens to be a bit on the tall side and can famously drink entire bottles of vodka as a starter.
I also have a female friend who is under 5 foot, has a crazy heart condition which fucks up her blood pressure and she can more than a bottle of vodka in one sitting and not die of alcohol poisoning.

Is she single?
It’s important you realise there is a big difference between Northern Ireland and Ireland – they are separate countries. Both Northern Ireland and Ireland have last orders, and although the times vary, they aren’t hugely different. Weekdays and Sunday, you’ll be able to drink until around midnight. Saturday night, until 3am or so. Clubs can be different again, and lock-ins are magical places where you can drink until sunrise.
Failing that, you can just have drinks in your house 24/7 :D
Because they glue themselves to their seats. Bloody cheaters.I know your dirty tactics, sitting there all merry whilst a bamboo cane and a lot of glue keeps you upright. And as for Coco, well. He’s OBVIOUSLY cheating having a stomach and liver almost twice the size of ours. Grr….
Scotish back group and Native American. So I can drink like a Scot, but do crazy things like Indians lol. Lets say partys can be fun LOL.
Anyone have a drink of choice?
(back ground!)not group…. lord I need a drink to sober up!
